AC Maintenance

Tips for Preventing AC Damages

There’s nothing worse than your air conditioner going out on the hottest day of the year. Yet, that seems to be the only time these units want to act up. The breakdown may have been expected, with signs showing in the weeks before the disaster, or it may seem to have come out of nowhere.

However, with the proper preparation and knowledge, you’re much less likely to have your AC give out on you when you need it most. The tips below can help ensure you can keep cool all summer long.

Replace Your Air Filter

One of the easiest ways to keep your air conditioner working as it should is to change your air filter as often as you should. Many air filters should be changed monthly, but certain types can be changed once every 90 days. A clean filter will keep air flowing smoothly through your house and improve air quality.

Keep Your Outdoor Unit Clean and Clear

Your outdoor AC unit needs to be unobstructed on all sides to ensure it can intake and exhaust air as it should. If you see debris like leaves, grass clippings, or twigs around your unit, remove them. The unit should have 12 inches of open space on all sides for optimal operation.

Check the Condensate Drain Pan

Your air conditioner removes humidity from indoor air, but this moisture must go somewhere. The drain pan collects and lets the water flow down the drain line. However, the pipe can become clogged, which can lead to leaks. Checking the drain pan and pipe regularly can help prevent a significant problem from occurring.

Keep Vents Open

Closing too many vents in your home can cause pressure imbalances and reduce the efficiency of your unit. To prevent air conditioner problems from occurring, keep at least 80 percent of your return and supply vents always open.

Use a Programmable Thermostat

Programmable thermostats are devices that help optimize your AC’s operation, which can prevent problems. You can program a schedule that works when you’re home and away, which can keep your AC from running when no one is home. Some thermostats even allow you to change the temperature using voice controls or smartphone apps.

Run a Ceiling Fan

Ceiling fans are a great compliment to your AC unit because they create a wind chill effect that can lower the temperature of a room by as much as four degrees. This can increase comfort in the room, even if your thermostat is set to a higher temperature. Plus, it will take some of the work off your unit, keeping it from developing issues.

Have Regular Maintenance

Regular air conditioner tune-ups are a crucial part of avoiding AC damage. Schedule your annual maintenance with the techs at Elite Heating and AC Repair. Your tech will ensure all aspects of your unit are clean and running as they should, which will help ensure your AC can work all summer.
