AC Installation: How to Prepare
Whether you’re building a new home, replacing an aging HVAC system, or upgrading from window units to a central heating and cooling system, knowing how to prepare is important. What should you know about AC installation? In this blog post, we’ll walk you through the most important considerations.
Be Clear on What You Are Ordering
The first and arguably most important tip to prepare for AC installation is to know what system you’re ordering. Make sure that the contractor provides you with full documentation – unit size, model name, the components you’ll need, and everything else. This will become very important later in the process.
Ductwork
First, take the time to thoroughly clean the ductwork in your home or business. If the ducts are filled with dust, dirt, hair, and other debris, it will compromise the efficiency and heating/cooling capabilities of your new system. As part of AC installation, have your ducts professionally cleaned before the HVAC contractor arrives. Of course, if you’re building a new home, you won’t have to worry about this step as your ductwork will be brand new.
Give Them Space
The HVAC contractor will need room to handle your AC installation. The contractor will have determined the right site for installation, but you’ll need to make sure that there’s plenty of room. Remove clutter, and make sure that the contractor can back the truck up to the spot to make unloading the AC components easier. Make sure the grass is trimmed back in the outdoor installation area and that there’s plenty of access.
Interior Considerations
You also need to prepare the inside of your home or business for AC installation. The most important thing is that there should be a clear path from the door to the installation point for the indoor unit. Remove any trip hazards like loose rugs, pet beds, and children’s toys. Depending on the available space, you may also need to move furniture out of the way, at least temporarily.
Trust but Verify
When the contractor arrives, take the time to review the system. Double-check that the system is in fact the one that you ordered. Mix-ups do happen and it’s possible that the system brought to your home or business is not what you ordered.
The new system must be a match for the original load calculation performed during the initial inspection and assessment. If the system being delivered does not match the load calculation, you’ll experience problems later on. Verifying that your system is correct ensures smooth sailing for years to come.
Know What the Contractor Should Do
Before the day when the contractor will install the new AC, make sure you discuss what they will do. In almost all AC installation situations, the contractor should provide the following services:
- Remove the old AC system (if applicable)
- Modify/repair ductwork for the new system
- Install the new AC system
- Test the AC system for operation
